I actually bought the Dell Axim x50 at a yard sale for $10! I'd say I got a bargain at ten times that price.

The unit was new in 2003-4 I guess.

Good: Fully Wi-Fi compatible.

Bad: WEP or nothing. I had to disable the encryption on my home router. It was just easier

Good: Screen can be used vertically or horizontally. Screen is bright and easy to read even for a vision impaired person such as myself

Bad: Nothing bad related to screen

Good: Plenty of software still available

Bad: It's hit or miss whether programs will work or not.

No Java or Flash applications work.

Windows 2003, Windows CE and Pocket PC? I'd like to "flash" it with a XP or something newer

Good: Battery life about 4 hours

Recharges almost fully (97%) in about thirty minutes

Bad: Make a backup of your settings because if the back-up battery dies you start over

Good: SD card slot.

Bad: There is a 32 gig SD card available but it probably won't work. I wouldn't pay $80 to find out!

Bad: I found 1 Flash II hard drive but only 5 gig. Good for a PDA I guess.

Bad: I tried to sync with the recommended and built in software but the PDA has an old version and the new version for the PC didn't work. If you want to sync your data put it on the SD card and use a card reader or do it manually with bluetooth.

Good: Bluetooth

Bad: Really choppy when wearing the ear piece. Use headphones.

Bad: This is not a phone!

Good: Maybe there is a 3rd party application that would make it a wi-fi phone. Skype doesn't work with it and I haven't checked others. Anyone know?

I have purchased this product and had the idea that it offered 802.1 wifi compatibility. It didnt so i had to go out and buy a socket wifi CF card. Other than this problem i have been fine. Works smoothly but its battery could be a little longer. Lasts about 2 days when in fair use. Excellent for non-wifi users. Holds SD CF type memory cards, contacts,appointments, tasks, any media file (not on all DMA files), and if u have the right tools the memory card could hold a couple full length movies. Overall Excellent Product

After having my Palm go completely un-synchable, I was determined to find an easy to use, up to date PDA. Though my needs are generally for addresses and appointments, the Axim was so easy to set up and use that I will explore its other uses. The software offers continuous synching while it is attached to my computer, and simple drag-and-drop for moving files from the computer. In short, the Axim suits my needs perfectly and promises easy exploration of other, more entertaining functions.

I find my dell pda to be very usefull from scheduling to listening to music to pretty much anything I need it for. I don't know why anyone would buy an IPOD when you can buy a PDA and get all the same features and much much more. You can add memory as you wish and save as many songs you want onto the sd cards.

Battery is easy twice as long lasting as original. Cover supplied for the LARGER battery doesn't fit. It barely hangs on if you force it. Not recommended only because cover constantly falling off, easy to loose battery.

"An oldie but a good pda that was never taken to its potential" 2009-09-29

I bought this unit just as they were being discontinued in 2004(?). For its time, this was a fantastic machine but the fact that Toshiba has never released a new os for it has pretty much hamstrung it for current usefulness. The US version of this unit comes with wifi but no bluetooth, the european version comes with bluetooth but no wifi. There were some interesting addons made for this unit. It was one of the first pdas with sdio support (meaning you can use a device in the sd slot just like the compact flash slot(such as a gps, bluetooth card etc.). There was also a add-on piece made for this pda with a usb slot and a vga plug for an external monitor, projector etc. I bought the addon glad I did because they are no longer available. Batteries still available on ebay, I also got the add-on charger. Even though MS supposedly offered free windows mobile 5 licenses, Toshiba never took up the gauntlet and released an update; real shame because hardware wise it's still a respectable machine. If you choose to use this today you're really restricted by what will run on it (pocket pc2003 SE). There are rumors that google will be releasing a version of Android for pdas but again, we'll be at the mercy of toshiba or a techie hacker for a os loader that will work on this pda. As it happens the e805 is a great machine for playing mp3's I was able to find a free mp3 player that supports several other formats as well so currently that's what I am using mine for. It does as well as most small mp3 players I've seen and other than no bluetooth it does well enough with better battery life if you've invested in a high performance battery. The unit can also play mpeg videos (again free players available online). With the proper add on drivers you can install the usb gadget and plug a memory stick or external hard drive into the unit and move files back and forth (I believe the driver cost me like 20 bucks years ago). The gps software I used to run on it no longer has up to date maps and newer pda packages no longer run on pc2003 so I can't use it for that anymore, which is a shame because it's excellent for that function.

I don't know if I'd pay 250 for this anymore (mine was like 600 new and that was a bargain at that time) since it's really only good for a media player anymore, if they'd realease a new OS for this it would again shine as an awesome machine.

The toggle switch on my new e805 broke the second time I moved it from WiFi to off. I sent the unit in under warrenty. Toshiba warrenty department said the mother board must be replaced to fix the toggle switch and is not covered under warrenty. They charged $125.00 to repair unit. I've bought a lot of Toshiba products, this will be the last.

I purchased the e805 dispite the bad reviews here and let me tell you mine works fine. I use it with navagation software and find it works way better than I expected.(travroute) E-mail works fine as does connecting to wireless internet services. I have had no problems with the screen. Not to mention I got lucky and paid $499.00 from COMPUSA. 2 THUMBS UP...Anyone interested in navagation software should give TRAVROUTE a try.

Additional Comments as of 2004-02-08:
1) The touch screen is now starting to malfunction. When I first turn the unit on I am getting many clicks (as if I am tapping the screen, which I am not). Also, later, if I even touch the case at the upper/right corner (not even near the actual display) the unit clicks (as if I am tapping the screen). Also upper sides of case sometimes.
2) Status of Toshiba Order for critical supplies (screen overlays and replacement styli):
Shipping is Waiting to Pack Order (from Toshiba account status)
In other words, they still don't have the items. About March 10, 2004 the screen overlays FINALLY arrived. Not a bad turnaround for something critical - two months. However, the unit is now inoperable, the screen does not respond. Did a total system reset, was operable for awhile. Then, screen clicking like a geiger counter it has stopped responding again.

When I first took it out of the box, it didn't, but I thought that was because the battery needed to be charged. I did finally get it setup and working. It was beautiful. Then the screen started acting weird, I'd tap the scroll bar and the today screen would pop back up, or I'd tape the "next" button and a different program would flash and then go away and then back to the today screen. Sometimes I'd turn it on and the screen wouldn't respond, then all of a sudden it did again. It was getting so bad that I hard reset and still couldn't get the screen to respond. I tried calling Toshiba, who only offers 90 days tech support, and they said they'd have someone call me back. A week later, I called them again and a week later I called a third time. Finally, I couldn't get the unit to respond at all, so I called J&R (where I purchased it via Amazon link) and they told me to send it back. They'd check it out and IF they found a problem they'd exchange it and refund my shipping fee. A lot of hassle for a very expensive machine, Toshiba is awful. I hope J&R comes through, as they agreed. They were nice on the phone, I think they will.
I did get my new, replacement from J&R. I was charged for it and I'm still waiting for them to credit me for the one I returned to them. The new one works MUCH better! It's a pleasure to use. I've only let the battery run down once; it stays pretty good, 4 or 5 days with normal use. This screen works the way it should. It responds well and it's really quick. I restored from a backup on my CF card and was up and running in seconds. I really love it. I like the CF and SD card slots and the fast processor. I like it much better than the iPAQ 5455 I had.

Fortunately, I received this as a gift, as I would be extremely mad if I had wasted $350 on this. After having it for under 5 days, the screen mysteriously cracked without it being touched in any way!

I've read numerous other reports of this happening. The screens on these will crack just sitting on the docking cradle. HP says that it's "accedential damage" and that it's impossible for it to be a defect. You can send it in for an evaluation, if they deem it to be "accidental damage", they will chard $215 to fix the screen. If you choose not to have them fix it, they will charge you $80 just to ship the broken thing back unrepaired.

About me, I'm a full-time employee at a very large software company associated with this device. I'm quite familiar with these devices, both how they work and how they should be treated. I am convinced that a significant portion of these devices are shipping with defective screens that they won't replace. Don't take your chances with HP, buy a different PocketPC.

This is just a wonderful product. It works perfectly with my blackberry curve from sprint. It even works with the phones magnectic holster sleep mode, which is exactly what I wanted. The only issue I have had so far is that the clp on the back in not removable. I would prefer that it was so that I could take it off so the phone would fit in my pocket or purse better, but it is only a minor inconvenience.

I bought the dell axim x5 a month ago, I like dell products, and own a laptop from them, so it was natural for me to buy the axim. The axim is a god product the x5 is an older model but it more than meets my needs, has all the basics; word, excel, mc library, outlook calender and email, internet explorer, windows media player. plus microsoft has all kinds of apps for the axim, you can add pictures and songs. the x5 has a great price as well. I reccomend adding a sd card for extra storage. The only problem i had was really my fault i bought a 4 gig sd card that would not work with the x5, later i found out that the x5 will not read sd cards over 2 gigs, so i bought a 2 gig card for [...] bucks, but that is more than enough space for most users

I bought mine in 2003. The little pda has been a constant companion of mine since then. I keep notes for work, play games, listen to music, read e-mail, surf the web, read ebooks, and watch movies. It is now four years and it is still going strong. I have used this device almost everyday. Yes, it is a little bigger than some pdas but it is durable and the battery has a good life. Also, if the battery life is not enough you can buy another battery for $5 on ebay and charge it in the second bay of the pda dock. Overall after four years I would call it outstanding.

I originally did not want them and asked what their return policy was they wouldn't take them back based on dislikes. But I would buy from this merchant again.

Works great-- It doesn't have all the extra functions of the "dock" that came with the XL5, but it gives you a far less delicate way of connecting to your computer and keeping it charged-- all things most users will need anyway.

One minor drawback-- the end of the cable that actually plugs into the media player is itself an adapter to a more generic cable. This adapter "head" is something else that can come loose and be lost. I wish the cable was all one piece.

"like a mini laptop.... sorta." 2007-09-12

Alright, so with the onslaught of IPODs, PSPs, tiny phones, GPS' and all that stuff, I was trying to figure out EXACTLY what I wanted. I wanted something that could play videos, MP3's, cruise the internet, hook a GPS antennae up to, and play games. Eventually I decided on the dell axim x51V. Then Refurbdepot... well.. forget refurbdepot. I wound up with an iPAQ HX2750, which stat-wise, is pretty much the same. It connects to the internet pretty well, but isn't very good for "surfing" I can check my e-mail, and chat on MSN messenger, but the way the internet is, alot of websites don't support the windows mobile 5 browser. I picked up a foldable keyboard for it, and it's great to have around if I want to type something out. The battery is TERRIBLE. It won't stay charged for more then 24 hours even if I don't use it at all. After about 10 minutes of use, I have to reset it completely in order to turn it on. Syncing takes quite a while as well. HOWEVER, with a 2 SD cards, I have one for programs, and the other for songs, and a compact flash card for overflow, and pictures. I play old dos games on it (with pDosbox) I can type with it using a foldable keyboard I picked up. I have a pelican case waterproof case for it with a soft rubber front on it, so it's fine to take camping, even in extremely wet environments (I've used it in the middle of a sandstorm in Kuwait back in 03') I can bluetooth, IR, move SD cards around, and cable sync with almost any electronic device, which is very nice. I can put it in it's cradle, pop on slide show, and watch pictures of my son go by all day at work. It's very usefull, but if your looking for a toy, I don't think this is the device for you. If your a techno-junkie, well... you might like it. I would recommend getting some accessories to make life more enjoyable for you though: 1, holster. It's too big to keep in your pocket, and you can keep extra SD cards and whatnot with you. 2:some form of actual keyboard. There is a popup screen for one, but you can only type at about 15-20 WPM. With a mini-keyboard, you can type 'almost' as fast as you do with a normal one, until you get the hang of it. 3: 2 gig SD, and a 1 or 2 gig compact flash. 4:download pdosbox (it's free) if you like old dos games, like warcraft, Lands of Lore, or lemmings. 5: extra screen protectors.

I have owned this PDA for four years now. As technology with cell phones has replaced some of the functions, I do not use it as much as I used to. I still prefer it for browsing the web vs. a cell phone.

This PDA has worked flawlessly for its entire life. It works great with the IPAQ GPS in the car. It is how I listen to Audible books. Depending on what you need a PDA for, this one is great.

I used to have RX3115, but I took the LCD out to replace the cracked LCD on HX2415

frankly, I like RX3115 better

I wanted RX3715 once, but the price just draw me back; once I have enough money, it's discontinued, all I found online are either used or recycled

luckily, I found one when I traveled in Hong Kong (Chinese version)

used it, and like it pretty well

the LCD is EXACTLY same as other QVGA RX and HX series, I put Brando on for screen protection

d-pad is pretty comfortable to press, but the application buttons are a little bit hard to press because they're small

the most impressing thing is battery time, I can get 10 hours+ mp3 playback with LCD off, 3.5 hours when playing music from file server through wifi/LAN, almost 8 hours of internet radio (WMP with LCD off) through bt

CPU is OK, but not good enough to watch videos with tcpmp

it has 60MB of free ROM (since it's Chinese version, the free ROM is fewer), I read about ROM lockup issue, and I don't encounter the problem (yet, but there's ROM change trick can fix)

also, you can add A2DP support (the software can be found at HP taiwan site), but it makes the system a lot slower when A2DP is active

the internal cam is not good, it's fine outdoors, but it's blur indoors, worse than some 1.3mpx cam phones (I don't need the cam anyways)

conclusion: this is the best ipaq I ever owned, though it don't have CF support, 4GB SD is getting cheap now; you should backup, format, restore the internal ROM every month to make it work properly, of course, you need to backup the entire system every month, or before/after you install/installed application, or added new contacts and/or settings

My attraction to the RX 3715 is the bundle of features it contains, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, reasonable memory with a 1 GB SD card, and the little digital camera. If you are looking for more speed, this is not for you. But, if you want a multi-package, it is.

Icing on the cake is the Nevo feature that allows you to use it as a remote control on devices around the house (or elsewhere).

"Not a Micro USB cable - false advertising, beware!" 2009-01-21

This is not a Micro USB cable, it's a Mini USB cable with one standard USB connector and one Mini USB connector. It's not what I need, want or ordered. I have no idea if the cables work and it's not relevant anyway - I didn't order these. There is really no way to know from the writeup or photo because the photo shows the back of the mini connector which is basically the same as the back of a micro connector. The only way to tell the difference in a photo is with a side or profile view.

I can return the item but all I'd get back is the "purchase price" of $0.01 per cable - I have to eat the shipping both ways. It's cheaper to just throw the darn things out (keeping them wastes space as well as the money already lost).

I must say, the purchase price of $0.01 seems like a good deal until you have to return an item. Then you see how all risk is shifted to the buyer. Items like this are great if you are sure that you'll get what you need. Otherwise, don't fall for the $0.01. The seller recovers their cost with high shipping charges and, effectively, no guarantee.

As the other reviewer stated, this is not a micro usb cable. I ignored the "zen" part because I thought it was for a MP3 player, and I didn't look closely enough at the pictures before I bought it. It appears to be Mini type A. I'm sure it will be fine, but this isn't what I need. The seller has no phone number on the invoice so I can't really get help from them in any kind of a timely fashion, and it would cost more to send it back than to eat what I paid for it.

"hx2415 - my $.02" 2009-01-26

I've had this little device now for maybe 3 years, upgraded from the starter h1915 (don't laugh, it was good for its time). All I can say is I'm always amazed by the hx2415's versatility. I keep up with hundreds of documents with it, something that would be a tree's nightmare 10 years ago; and it doesn't miss a beat when opening any of them. Being able to quickly and easily access WAPs is definitely its best feature. I usually can find myself jumping on the 'net to look up something (many times to prove someone wrong), and while it does take WiFi a bit to come "online", once it does it's only a matter of bringing up internet exploder and I'm off! Not to mention the gaming capability...and being able to watch full DVDs (with the appropriate purchased software) with stunning clarity! The only negative I can offer is the 64MB of RAM/ROM. While the unit can handle most app memory requirements pretty well, there are some memory hogs that make me wish I had waited for the more beefier 128MB model. This is still far superior to many, though. It's a hand-held entertainment system (can't wait for my 16 GB CF Card to arrive).

I have had this unit for several years now (3+ I believe). I work in construction and this unit has been amazingly durable, I had bought a leather case that stays on it all the time (except when its in the sync cradle) that protects it somewhat. This unit has been in 100 degree heat and below freezing temps, gotten rained on and dropped several times and just keeps on working. I recently started geocaching and I use it to keep up with the info on the caches and it goes with me into the woods and everywhere. I have gotten my moneys worth from this unit many times over and would definitely recommend it to others.

This product worked great, however the touch screen began getting dead spots after about three years of seldom use. I would guess that continuous use it would be even less. Replacing the screen is the only solution and that costs as much as the product itself. I recommend keeping the warranty up to date or not buying this product at all. I don't think that three years is worth the money I spent on the product.

I purchased my hx2415 three years ago, and have enjoyed it on many long trips. It's ability to communicate via 802.11b, bluetooth or serial infared gives it great functionality. The SD and CF slots are a good way to store vast amounts of data without cluttering up the iPaq's limited internal storage. I use HP's bluetooth GPS along with iGuidance to help me navigate while I travel. My travelling MP3's are stored in a 2 gig sd card, and are easily accessed by the iPaq's Windows Media Player. The whole case is protected by an all aluminium clamshell that I found on Amazon for under $20. Throw away the clear plastic flip-lid that came with the iPaq, as it will not protect it.

As some have noted, these PDA's will eat batteries if not configured properly. Make sure to shutdown any alert sounds or pop-ups that are generated outside the operating system. Even the M/S calendar can turn on the unit to remind you of appointments. That's great if you're at your desk, but it's not so good if the PDA is locked in a suitcase. Also make sure to shutdown the infared port when it's not needed. The standby battery control is a bit awkward, as you can select the length of "stand-by" time. Make sure to set it at maximum, so the unit can last longer after the main battery drains. Lastly, get in the habit of checking the screen after you press power button. A long press only shuts down the screen backlight, but the unit keeps running. I always check to make sure the unit is truely powered off.

"A versatile pocket computer" 2006-07-06

I have had an HP 2415 for a year. First the bad news - the battery will drain if it is docked and no power is turned on - despite being set to go to sleep when powered. I have had to reload software 10 times because of this flaw.

The purpose of this review is to show what you can do with this little device if you buy the right software.

The whole reason for not having a combined phone and PDA is to get maximum battery power.

Having said that my main use is to sync with Outlook for email reading and looking up phone numbers.

I usually use WiFi to connect to the Internet - in a pinch I can use Bluetooth (saves battery) and connects well to Cingular with my Bluetooth enabled cellphone - but because I don't have a very good data plan with Cingular it cost me $40 to get 5MB of data while between flights in an airport - so if you want to save battery and use Bluetooth and your cellphone to connect to the Internet sign up for a good data plan.

I've also added a whole bunch of software to make it more useful.

If I travel I can convert a movie to run on an SD card using Pocket DVD.

I have star gazing software which is useful as the screen lights up at night - also SatPPC tracks the shuttle and international space stations.

Free Bubbles and Tetris games (from Ramon De Klein) with a paid Trivial Pursuits give you something to do in airports.

For mapping I can download Mapquest routes using AvantGo for free. I have Microsoft's Streets and Trips and the version with GPS has a Pharos GPS that works in the CF slot (even though the last pin of the CF slot got bent and was not covered by warranty and the slot won't take a memory card any more - not a big deal as the device can only address 4GB). I also have Outdoor Navigator - no longer in business. Its good for geotracking.

I have Pocket Diet Tracker - again no longer offered on Handango - the advantage being you can import the entire USDA food database plus make your own or download from the Pocket Diet Tracker site calorie sheets from fast food restaurants.

I can learn Spanish on the device.

You need third party software to make it sync with iTunes - so I don't do that but it can store MP3 files, playing them with Windows Media Player.

I take books with me - downloaded Acrobat Reader and Flash (the latter essential for website browsing).

While on website browsing - it won't take popups and the browser is weak - so a plea to website developers - don't use Flash or extra windows - stick to tables and animated GIFs and use a version of HTML - then web browsing works fine.

The Oxford Pocket Dictionary is pretty weak, and I have an Encyclopedia Brittanica on an SD card as well as World Almanac for reference. I have Quick Verse and Laridian (NIV study Bible) for reading various Bible Versions - so no need to carry a Bible to church any more.

TapBirds is a bird watching program that would be more useful if it had better descriptions and a wider choice of birds - but for seeing what you are supposed to be looking at it works fine.

Finally free software Tipster lets you calculate tips for groups of friends at a restaurant.

PhonTuner can be used to tune instruments such as guitars and violins.

All in all this is a very useful device. I understand I could upgrade the OS to Windows Mobile 5.0 to overcome the power draining problems - but then some of my software would be obsolete.

I bought this used and cannot figure out how to download apps on it!! other than that it is pretty good. It connects to the internet fast, and the programs all run well. I just wish i knew how to put more programs on it!!!

We like the Dell Axim x50v. It does a lot of work for a device that easily fits in your shirt pocket. It is fairly intuitive when working with Microsoft and similar programs. The only caveat is we lose data. Occassionally we'll need a contact phone number and it's gone. Looking around, usually a whole swath of contacts have been cut, such as 40 people whose last names begin with "P." Oh, they're not gone permanently, they always reappear after a soft re-start but we have had to do this a dozen times in the 5 months we've had it.

The screen is clear, the memory sufficient for a huge database of contacts and prospects, and easy to use. Overall, it's a great value.

I had a very simple (and cheap) sony clie for 3 years before this and loved it. The axim is like getting an airplane after getting used to driving a car. A little scary, but cool as well. some simple features are not as well designed, like the address book and task list. I thought it would be more user-friendly and intuitive. Like saving files - I ran out of memory after loading on 4 books - the trick is to get them to another part of the memory. I did not really need or want the nifty media features. The pocket word program is VERY basic. Pocket Excel is nice. I still have not figured out how to get the internet to work. So some frustrations, but a pretty product I may grow to love more than I do now. Customer service was great to me which was a delightful surprise - one of the big reasons I bought a Dell is because the service on my laptop last year (I needed a new hard drive in the end) was SO HEINOUS I vowed to NEVER EVER buy from compaq/hewett packard again. Finally, the axim is pretty small which I think is great.

I bought this along with the USB keyboard and the Q1 Ultra - the Q1 ultra does not fit the case as it's about 1/4 of an inch smaller than the old Q1. However the case is very practical so I used some velcro tape to attach the Q1 to the case - thus far no problems and the case protects the device and has a kickstand.

The cable works fine, and the price is excellent. The only reason I did not give this a 5th star is that I ordered 15 of these and they each arrived 3 ft -- not the 5 ft as detailed in the technical specifications. Since our field sales people will be using these for customer presentations, the extra 2 ft would have been really helpful. But, we are in a time crunch and need to work with what we have in hand. Overall, this is a decent cable at a great price.

The two connectors I had for my iPaq h1945, aka h1940 (one cable for the PC connection, another for charging alone) started messing up (specifically the metal catches on the sides got bent -- be careful about this as it can happen with any of these, but it did take some years for it to happen to me.) One started making my PDA produce a buzzing noise if I didn't plug it in just right, which is obviously more than a little bit worrying, so that one is in the trash now since I want my PDA to continue to last for a long time yet. I ordered this because it's the only one not at a ridiculous price. One little oddity though. The part labeled "up" goes down! It took me a little while to figure out why it wasn't going in and just as I got worried it was the wrong thing I tried it the other way and was surprised to see it work.

Pros:

Snug fit probably won't mess up as easily over time assuming it doesn't break the interface in the PDA...

Rolls up into something more convient that the ordinary to carry around.

Universal compatibility with charging systems since it's plain USB (you can buy adapters to plug into a wall or car -- in fact, there are systems that can provide power to a USB device via a rechargable battery and this works with those as well as any adapter.)

Great price! Well, actually, it feels to me like it is priced at what its worth, but for some reason the usual price is around $20 or so which is ridiculous for just a charger/sync cable...

Cons:

Cable could be a little longer. I like to leave my PDA charging on a dresser, but I'm going to have to use an extention cord just to do this now.

USB ONLY. You can't plug in the standard charger that comes with the PDA for power. This wouldn't be so bad, but USB only allows up to 500mA per bus. I don't know exactly how much power the PDA uses while running, but it seems to be enough that you don't really get much if any of a charge while plugged into USB whereas the charger provides 2A of power so it easily lets the PDA run purely off of external power AND charge at the same time. But then I'm not entirely certain it can't still do this as the PDA surely can't use all of 500mA or its little 940mAh batter wouldn't last very long at all...
